Become a certified lifeguard. NAVSTA Norfolk MWR Aquatics is hosting an American Red Cross Lifeguarding course from 9 AM to 5:30 PM at the FRP Swimming Pool. This course will take place beginning Monday, June 2 through Thursday, June 5. This course is for children age 15 and older and costs $150 per person. Registration can be done by visiting the FRP Swimming Pool.
There is a prerequisite swim test that can be completed by setting up an appointment with Morgan Conley (757-444-0870) or Sara Baines (757-445-0063).
The pre-test consists of:
Completing a swim-tread swim sequence without stopping to rest: 150 yard freestyle and/or breaststroke – tread water for two minutes using only legs – swim 50 yards freestyle or breaststroke. Goggles may be worn for this portion.
Complete a timed event within one minute 40 seconds: Starting in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound brick. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to return to starting point while holding the brick in both hands at the surface with your face out of or near the surface. Then exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Swim goggles are not allowed for the timed event.
